Fugro Aperio awarded a contract to survey 1,000 km of railway trackbed
Fugro Aperio has been awarded a contract to survey 1,000km of railway trackbed using a train-mounted ground penetrating radar for a European national rail operator.
The survey was conducted from the rail operator's survey train as part of its routine data collection cycle. By mounting the latest rapid scanning multi-frequency radar and positioning systems on the train the team were able to complete the project in just 7 days without disrupting scheduled passenger and freight services.
The overall objective of the project is to provide the rail operator with a long term asset management tool which can be used to compare and rank trackbed conditions across the network. The comprehensive dataset provided by Fugro will enable the owner to pinpoint locations that require further investigation and intervention and develop a long term maintenance plan.
Investment in this type of network survey can result in improved maintenance and considerable long term cost savings.
